On Thursday nights, my Ephraim House family have been reading from a book called "Healing The Wounds of the Heart." It teaches about how to minister to those in our lives that have experienced trauma. It's been incredibly eye opening to hear about how wounds of the heart present themselves in people in different ways, and reading this book has helped me to recognise those behaviours in people I minister weekly, and even daily. An important tool for healing heart wounds is listening. (Strangely enough; the module I am working on for my counselling course is titled "Active Listening"! It's amazing to see how God connects things ) Here is one of the notes I took from last night's study; - When someone is sharing with you, don't be quick to offer cheap advice, or to share about your own experiences in the matter. "He who gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame." - Proverbs 18:13 We've all either 1. Had someone do this to us or 2. Done this ourselves. We need to be able to sacrifice our own desires, and truly pay attention to the person. Here's an acrostic for the way that Jesus listened: L – Love Jesus listened without prejudice. He mixed non-judgemental acceptance and unconditional love with the Truth of the Word. I – Inquire Jesus often asked people questions. Statements of "It sounds like you feel left out", or similar empathetic phrases allow the person to re-clarify their feelings, make them feel understood and help you understand more deeply. S – Stop Jesus didn’t let His busyness keep Him from listening. He stopped to listen to the blind man, to the woman with the issue of blood, to the little children, to the woman at the well. T – Test Jesus patiently drew out what was inside people. "Search me, Lord, and know my heart. Try me and know my anxieties. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:23-24) E – Engage Jesus stayed in the moment as He ministered to people. N – Nudge Jesus demonstrated a life of listening to His heavenly Father (Mk. 1:35) so when He nudged people to also listen (Matt. 15:10; Lk. 8:18), He knew what He was asking of them.
